Conference: How Arctic coastal processes are influencing the taste of mangos

Dr Anna Irrgang, Alfred Wegener Institute, Potsdam, Germany

Open conference at IGOT, 16 May 2022, 12h00

Anna Irrgang is a coastal geomorphologist who specialized in Arctic coastal processes. Her passion about Arctic coasts arose from a coincidence as she run out of work during her internship about Caribbean Tsunamis at the USGS in California. Thus, she got put on the task to classify over 5000 pictures of the Alaskan coast and quickly got fascinated by the high diversity of landscapes and the uniqueness of the Arctic environment. Three years later and by taking many detours, Anna found a way to get to the Arctic with the Geological Survey of Canada and finally saw the coast with her own eyes! Since ten years now, she is investigating how the Arctic coast is changing in response to changing climatic conditions and which consequences these changes have for the human and natural environment. Besides being lead and co-author of several papers on Arctic coastal dynamics, she was recently the lead author of a paper on the drivers, dynamics and impacts of changing Arctic coasts in the journal Nature Reviews in Earth and Environment.

Polar2E – The University of Lisbon College on Polar and Extreme Environments opens a call for expressions of interest for PhD graduates to apply for the FCT Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus – 4th Edition. Polar2E is the new interdisciplinary ULISBOA College, joining the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning, the ISCSP – Social and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Sciences, the IST-Técnico, with researchers from various research centres from the University of Lisbon.

We are accepting applications on Polar and/or Extreme Environment research under the following Polar2E Strategical Areas:

– Biogeochemistry of extreme environments,
– Changes in Polar marine ecosystems,
– Climate modelling,
– Cryosphere / Permafrost,
– Polar and extreme ecosystems,
– Remote sensing,
– Social and Political Sciences,
– Space environment,
– Sustainable architecture in extreme environments.

Other topics may be accepted, if within the scope of Polar2E (http://polar2e.ulisboa.pt).

The applications will be pre-evaluated by the research centres of Polar2E for assessing the possibilities for support and integration as host institution. For this initial step, candidates must submit until 29 January 2021 to the Board of Directors of Polar2E the following documents: 1) a short cv with key publications, 2) a summary of the research plan (max 5,000 characters) and 3) a motivation letter, indicating the reference level to which will be applying (Junior, Assistant, Principal or Coordinating Researcher).
