For over a decade, the University of Lisbon School of Social and Political Sciences conducts research and training on Polar geopolitics and geostrategy, mainly on Arctic issues, having been responsible for several theses on the topic. It organizes every year the Lisbon International Arctic Conference and Workshop, which this year will be held on the 11 December.
With the support of the ULisboa rectorate communication team, the POLAR2E logo is out!
The symbol shows a very stylized P2E, with the blue for cold regions, cryosphere, ocean and atmosphere, the green for biosphere and the orange for the hot arid regions, the waves depicting the interactions in the linked Earth System, and saturn identifying extraterrestrial environments.
Polar2E started on the 25th March with the series of Early Career Researcher webinars aiming at promoting cooperation among our team members and also to train on presenting research results. The 1st of a series of webinars was presented by Pedro Freitas, PhD student at IGOT about his research on permafrost thaw lakes by remote sensing.
The University of Lisbon College on Polar and Extreme Environments was launched in the 6 March 2020 in a public event with the participation of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Prof. Manuel Heitor, and the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Prof. António da Cruz Serra. The session was jointly organized with the new Tropical College and included a round-table and debate with the public on the objectives of the colleges. The questions from the public focussed on the possibilities of extension of Polar2E to other schools of ULisboa, especially in the area of Social Sciences, as well as on the potential for cooperation on Antarctic research with Angola.
