EU-Polarnet publishes important white papers

EU-PolarNet published this week the Integrated European Polar Research Programme, the White Paper on Infrastructure Access and Interoperability and the White Paper on Status of Stakeholder Engagement in Polar Research.

These very relevant documents will help support Europe in strengthening the impact of its research in the Polar regions, linking science and societal needs, while aligning infrastructure with the main research questions and objectives.

The Polar team of CEG/IGOT, part of Polar2E, contributed to the Integrated Polar Research Programme and coordinated the White Paper on Infrastructure Access and Interoperability.

Welcome to the 2nd Newsletter of the University of Lisbon College on Polar and Extreme Environments (Polar2E).  This season newsletter has several announcements, including the appointment of Gonçalo Vieira, Director of Polar2E as vice-president of the International Permafrost Association. Other news includes grant-winning by members of Polar2E, ongoing project highlights, peer-review publications by members, and participation in outreach activities and fieldwork. The newsletter also focusses on the research performed by Polar2E Early Career Researcher (ECR), through interviews and by Webinars. The Polar2E Early Career Researcher (ECR) Webinars are open to the Polar2E community, typically taking place on Wednesdays at 17:30 Lisbon time. They are 10 to 15 minutes’ presentation on the ongoing research by ECRs. Finally, upcoming events and opportunities are also highlighted in this newsletter.

Gonçalo vieira is vice-president of the international permafrost association

Gonçalo Vieira, Director of the University of Lisbon College on Polar, was elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Permafrost Association in the last Council Meeting in June . He agreed to serve as one of the IPA Vice-Presidents and was appointed to this position by the Executive Committee for the period of 2020-2024.

The Executive Committee of the IPA for 2020-2022 is:
– Christopher Burn (Canada), President
– Isabelle Gärtner-Roer (Switzerland), Vice-President
– Gonçalo Vieira (Portugal), Vice-President
– Kjersti Gisnas (Norway)
– Michael Krautblatter (Germany)

The International Permafrost Association, founded in 1983, has as its objectives to foster the dissemination of knowledge concerning permafrost and to promote cooperation among persons and national or international organizations engaged in scientific investigation and engineering work on permafrost.

Polar2e logo is ready

Polar2E

With the support of the ULisboa rectorate communication team, the POLAR2E logo is out!

The symbol shows a very stylized P2E, with the blue for cold regions, cryosphere, ocean and atmosphere, the green for biosphere and the orange for the hot arid regions, the waves depicting the interactions in the linked Earth System, and saturn identifying extraterrestrial environments.

The University of Lisbon College on Polar and Extreme Environments was launched in the 6 March 2020 in a public event with the participation of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Prof. Manuel Heitor, and the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Prof. António da Cruz Serra. The session was jointly organized with the new Tropical College and included a round-table and debate with the public on the objectives of the colleges. The questions from the public focussed on the possibilities of extension of Polar2E to other schools of ULisboa, especially in the area of Social Sciences, as well as on the potential for cooperation on Antarctic research with Angola.

Public launch of the new colleges of ulisboa

The two new colleges of the University of Lisbon: Polar2E – Polar and Extreme Environments and CTrop – Tropical will be presented next friday at 15:00 at the Salão Nobre (Reitoria da Universidade de Lisboa, Alameda da Cidade Universitária).

The session will consist on an introduction by the Rector of ULISBOA, followed by a presentation of the colleges and their objectives by the respective directors. The opening will be followed by a round-table with researchers of the two colleges including a debate with the public.

An ice-breaker and an opportunity for networking will take place at 17:15.

The session is open to the public and you are most welcome to attend.

Permarsenic team in the Canadian Sub-Arctic

João Canário and Diogo Ferreira from Polar2E – CQE/IST are now at the Centre of Northern Studies (CEN) research station at Kuujjuarapik/Whapmagoostui in Northern Quebec, for the winter campaign of the project “Arsenic speciation and biogeochemistry in Permafrost Thaw Lakes – Permarsenic” funded by the FCT through the Portuguese Polar Program. Permarsenic involves an interdisciplinary team of Polar2E and of CEN.
